What is a Lifting Shackle?
Lifting shackles are widely used across manufacturing, construction, engineering, offshore, maintenance and material handling applications. Bow and dee shackles are available in different designs and capacities, allowing the appropriate shackle to be selected for the lifting arrangement.
Different pin configurations are suited to different applications. Screw pin shackles are generally used where connections are regularly assembled and disassembled, while safety bolt and fixed-nut shackles provide additional security for longer-term applications or where vibration and pin rotation may be concerns. Green Pin
Carl Stahl Evita supplies lifting shackles from established manufacturers, with a growing range of Green Pin® products alongside additional shackle types and manufacturers being added to our range. Our team can help you select a suitable shackle based on your working load limit, lifting configuration and application.

Bow, Dee and Specialist Shackles
Bow shackles have a wider body that provides additional room for connecting multiple lifting components, making them commonly suited to multi-leg lifting systems. Dee shackles have a narrower profile and are mainly used for one-leg lifting systems.
The pin configuration should also be selected according to the application. Screw pin shackles are generally used where connections need to be assembled and removed regularly, while safety bolt and fixed-nut shackles provide additional security for long-term applications, dynamic loads or situations where there is a risk of the pin rotating.
Specialist shackles are also available for applications requiring particular load capacities, dimensions, materials or operating conditions

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a lifting shackle used for?
A lifting shackle provides a removable connection between lifting equipment and a load. Shackles can be used to connect chains, wire rope, slings and other lifting accessories during lifting and handling operations.
2. What is the difference between a bow shackle and a dee shackle?
Bow shackles have a wider, rounded body that provides more space for connecting multiple lifting components. Dee shackles have a narrower profile and are generally used for one-leg lifting systems.
3. What is the difference between a screw pin and safety bolt shackle?
Screw pin shackles are designed for applications where the connection needs to be assembled and removed regularly. Safety bolt shackles use a bolt, nut and securing pin to provide additional security against accidental pin rotation or unscrewing.
4. How do I choose the right working load limit for a shackle?
The shackle’s working load limit (WLL) must be suitable for the load and lifting configuration. The number of lifting legs, loading direction and application conditions should all be considered when selecting a shackle.
5. Can lifting shackles be used for multi-leg lifting?
Yes, suitable bow shackles can be used in multi-leg lifting systems where their capacity and configuration are appropriate. The shackle must be selected according to the lifting arrangement and manufacturer’s specified WLL.
6. Are lifting shackles suitable for offshore applications?
Yes. Specialist lifting shackles are available for demanding marine and offshore applications, with certain designs offering certifications and specifications suited to these environments.
7. What should I check before using a lifting shackle?
Check the shackle for visible damage, deformation, excessive wear, corrosion and signs of damage to the body or pin. Confirm that the WLL and identification markings are legible and that the shackle is correctly assembled before use.
8. Do lifting shackles need to be inspected?
Yes. Lifting shackles should be included within the appropriate inspection and examination arrangements for lifting equipment and accessories. Inspection requirements will depend on how the equipment is used and the applicable regulations and procedures.
