ABOUT LIFTING SLINGS

What is a Lifting Sling?

A lifting sling is a flexible lifting accessory used to connect a load to a crane, hoist or other lifting equipment. Slings are available in different materials and configurations, with the appropriate type selected according to the load, working load limit, lifting arrangement and operating environment.

Chain Slings
Chain slings are manufactured from high-strength steel chain and are designed for demanding lifting applications. They offer excellent durability and can be configured as single-leg or multi-leg assemblies, with hooks and other components selected to suit the application.

Wire Rope Slings
Wire rope slings provide a strong and flexible solution for lifting heavy loads. They are available in different constructions and configurations, making them suitable for industrial lifting where strength, flexibility and durability are important.

Webbing Slings
Webbing slings are lightweight and flexible, making them particularly useful for lifting delicate or irregularly shaped loads. Their soft polyester construction can help reduce the risk of surface damage while remaining easy to handle.

Roundslings
Roundslings consist of high-strength fibres enclosed within a protective outer sleeve. Their flexible construction allows them to conform around loads, providing a versatile solution for a wide range of lifting applications.

Textile Chain Slings
Textile chain slings provide a lightweight alternative to traditional steel chain slings. Made from high-strength synthetic fibres such as Dyneema®, they combine high lifting capacity with reduced weight and flexibility, making them useful where load protection and ease of handling are important.

LIFTING SLING SELECTION

Choosing the Right Lifting Sling

Working Load Limit

Choose a sling with a suitable working load limit (WLL) for the load being lifted. The required capacity depends on the load weight, sling configuration and how the sling is being used.

Sling Type

Consider which type of sling is best suited to the load and application. Chain, wire rope, webbing and roundslings offer different combinations of strength, flexibility, durability and load protection.

Configuration & Sling Angle

Consider the number of sling legs, effective length and angle of the sling when selecting your equipment. The loading on sling legs changes with the angle, so the WLL must be suitable for the actual lifting configuration.

Load & Environment

Consider the shape, weight and surface of the load, as well as the working environment. Sharp edges, temperature, moisture, chemicals and other conditions can affect the suitability of a sling and may require additional protection.
SLING CONFIGURATIONS

Configurations for Different Lifting Requirements

Lifting slings can be configured in different ways depending on the load, lifting points and method of attachment. Selecting the appropriate configuration helps ensure the load is supported correctly and that the sling is used within its rated working load limit.

Single-Leg Slings
Single-leg slings provide a straightforward connection between the lifting equipment and the load. They are commonly used where a suitable lifting point is available and the load can be safely supported from a single connection.

Multi-Leg Slings
Two-, three- and four-leg sling assemblies can provide multiple connection points for larger or more complex loads. The number of legs, their angle and the distribution of the load must be considered when determining the appropriate WLL.

Endless & Choked Configurations
Endless slings can be used in different configurations, including basket and choke arrangements, providing flexibility when attaching to loads without dedicated lifting points. The rated capacity can vary depending on how the sling is configured.

Adjustable & Specialist Slings
Specialist sling arrangements can be configured for particular load shapes, dimensions or lifting requirements. These can include adjustable assemblies, bridle slings and solutions incorporating different hooks, links and other lifting components.

HSE guidance specifically highlights that sling angle affects the load carried by individual legs, while suitable packing may be required to protect slings from sharp edges.
